About Nerea Aixàs
sculpture as jewellery
This young artist from Andorra, now settled in Barcelona, began her artistic career specialising in the sculpture of iron. This is a material that she enjoys moulding and her mastery of the technique has proven astonishing. Occasionally, she also works in wood, though she states a clear preference for metals.
Her artistic sphere broadened when she decided to miniaturise her sculptural work to convert it into pieces of jewellery. This adaptation of her sculpture as jewellery adjusts it to the scale of the human body. For this purpose, she chose noble metals such as silver (her favourite), gold and bronze, combined with innovative materials like cork, coral or weathering steel. Occasionally, she also employs colour, giving a light-hearted touch to the pieces. She applies the finishing touches to the metals by hand, in the finest detail, until she achieves the transformation and interpretation of her sculptures to a small scale.
To this end, she poses herself the following question: How would I wear this sculpture? In this way, an object that was initially created to be contemplated (the sculpture) is transformed to become a participatory object (the piece of jewellery). The body is able to share in the sculpture through its adaptation as a piece of jewellery which may now, finally, be worn.
The sculptural lines of her creations are not confined by any particular trend but born with a vocation for timelessness without, however, renouncing a highly contemporary aesthetic form.
